Missionaries Serving in Albania
Nathan and Gabriela Hoppe are long-term OCMC missionaries serving in Albania under the direction of Archbishop Anastasios.
Nathan and Gabriela are working to inspire, train, equip, and lead Albanians to proclaim the Gospel and make disciples in Albania. The key to this process is planting and fostering the life of healthy, vibrant, local Eucharistic communities. They feel a tremendous urgency to follow Christ's command to make disciples of all nations in this land where, less than a generation ago, complete atheism was enforced by the totalitarian communist government. Though Albania has experienced rapid economic development since the collapse of the communist system, the country is still mired in pervasive corruption and many people are deeply discouraged about their prospects for the future. The Orthodox Church of Albania has experienced a resurrection under the inspired leadership of Archbishop Anastasios. This resurrection is one of the miracles of the Orthodox world today, but there is still much work to be done.
Nathan was born and raised in Colombia, South America, where his mother continues to serve as a missionary. He holds master’s degrees from Wheaton College and Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology and a D. Min. (Doctor of Ministry) from St. Vladimir’s Theological Seminary. Nathan has served in Albania for more than 23 years. Gabriela, a native of Albania, is a graduate of the Resurrection of Christ Theological Academy and the University of Tirana; she also holds a master's degree in Children's and Family Ministry from Bethel Seminary. The Hoppes have three children, Tristan (23), Katherine (21), and Daniel (11).
Nathan and Gabriella direct the Central Children’s Office of the Orthodox Church of Albania with a staff of 15 full-time workers. The ministry of the Children’s Office is focused on fostering and facilitating the life of local Eucharistic communities through ministry to children and their families. Nathan is a Lecturer at Logos University in the Department of Theology and Culture and represents the Orthodox Church of Albania in a variety of venues including the official dialogues with the Roman Catholic Church, the Lutheran World Federation, and the worldwide Anglican Communion.
